National Hurricane Preparedness Week

Written by John Clark | May 13, 2021 5:00:00 AM

This week is National Hurricane Preparedness Week. As the start of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season is quickly approaching, it is crucial for insurers to prepare internally and help policyholders understand their risk.

The National Hurricane Center states, “Hurricanes are not just a coastal problem. Their impacts can occur hundreds of miles inland, and significant impacts can occur without it being a major hurricane”. Determining your geographic risk is an essential step in preparing for hurricane season.

Other steps you can take to prepare:

  • Create an emergency plan for your family
  • Know your evacuation zone and routes
  • Download the FEMA app for real-time alerts from the National Weather Service
  • Make sure your insurance policies and personal documents are up to date
  • Purchase backup charging devices to power electronics
  • Strengthen your home: declutter drains and gutters, bring in outside furniture, consider hurricane shutters
  • Have enough supplies for your household, include medication, disinfectant supplies, masks, pet supplies
