Tropical Storm Eta Continues to Linger in the Gulf of Mexico

Tropical Storm Eta has stalled in the Gulf of Mexico and has forecasters puzzled on its next move.

The storm is currently sitting off the west coast of Cuba, with sustained winds of 60 MPH and 70 MPH gusts. Before stalling in the Gulf, Eta brought flash and urban flooding to parts of Cuba, the Bahamas, and southern Florida. Miami and Fort Lauderdale reported an estimated 3 feet of water in some places.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) expects Eta to begin moving north this evening and making landfall Sunday morning somewhere along the north-central US Gulf Coast.

The NHC stated, “Eta has been nearly stationary, and little motion is expected through this afternoon. A slow northward motion is forecast to begin by this evening and continue through Thursday.”

Eta is the 28th named storm of the now record-breaking 2020 hurricane season. Subtropical Storm Theta formed Monday night in the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean, breaking the record for most named storms in a single season.
